the Vintage Watch & A Pitch

Monday, February 10th, 2014

The company established its name by serving royalty and celebrities. But that began to change. By the early 1900s, the company had branches in London and New York. Each shop was staffed by its own designers and jewelry makers. In London, especially, expert jewelry-making skills were handed down from generation to generation. To this day, fathers and sons are still working side by side. Early model often had the word Paris underneath the brand name, and a flower rosette in the center of the dial. Very nice details that were only seen on early pieces.

This pocket watch also comes with its original papers and box, which also show the same pride and skill in their aesthetics and design as the watch itself. The box is cushioned with red velvet to protect this mint condition piece. A ring of gold medals won by the watch masters at Patek Philippe, framing the piece as it sits on its throne. With this particular brand new interpretation from the acclaimed Container collection, the actual Maison Parisienne seems to have taken a step ahead within creativeness, granting true dandies all over the world the chance in order to revamp their own wrists with a genuinely timeless piece.

At the next booth, Larengregor SA, I spotted a few rarities including a fantastic Hemmerle brooch and some Art Deco beauties as well. The endless signed jewels at J S Fearnley booth were quite mesmerizing, however I found that this particularly antique brooch caught my eye with its crystal clear old mine Colombian emerald. Sadly, I can’t recall the booth where I saw the following Machine Age bracelets, but they were some of the coolest finds at the show! The Citizen watch is, by certain standards, the most popular time piece in the world today. But Citizen wasn’t always Citizen. Long before that it was the Shokasha Watch Research Institute, which took shape in 1918. Analog watches are simply watches with moving hands. A digital watch is a watch with a small LED or LCD screen that displays the time in a digital format. Analog watches are considered to be somewhat more elegant and dressy, as well as traditional. In the early 1920s Cartier formed a joint company with Edward Jaeger (of Jaeger- LeCoutre ) to produce movements solely for Cartier. Thus was the European watch & clock company born, although Cartier continued to use movements from other great makers. Cartier watches can be found with movements from Vancheron Constatin, Audemars-Piguet, Movado and LeCoutre I’d say my favorite classic wristwatch is the Movado Polyplan. I think it was patented or created in about 1912, and from what I understand they made them into the mid-1930s, but very few of them. I’ve owned a bunch over the years and have sold some to the Movado Museum.

Excuse me, what’s the time?” asks a passing stranger at a train station. The woman standing on the platform doesn’t glance at her wrist, but instead pulls a phone from her pocket. “Almost noon,” she says. Even though she’s wearing a watch, she’s not thinking of it as a way to tell time. With a vast array of electronic devices at our disposal—from blackberries and iphones to mp3 players and ipads—a watch is no longer a necessity. The watch’s more practical purpose of keeping time is fading as its popularity as a fashion accessory rises.

Do not be a stranger, and do not forget that shopping can be fun and not stressfull. We hope you find everything you need on our site, and we know it can be done quickly. Thank you, and see you soon. Stainless case (polished, back engraved) in good condition (a few dings on top and a period sized dot of pitting on top, 5 minute mark faded and re-drawn by hand) Original 2-tone silvered dial with 45 minute register, embossed rose gold roman numerals, and inner blue tachymeter in excellent condition

But does the fever pitch of these sales endanger what has made mechanical watches so fascinating in the first place? In contrast to these brand-driven, investment-oriented buying frenzies, Sotheby’s November auction in London features creations by George Daniels, who handcrafted watches one at a time. His creations remind us what true watchmaking is all about. It’s clear, though, that the business of serious watch collecting is here to stay. We sat down with the respected Milan-based watch connoisseur and dealer Max Bernardini for an insider’s view on collecting—and to talk about the watches of today that might become the collectibles of tomorrow. The Art of Collecting

So Rolex popularized the concept of obtaining chronometer certificates for wristwatches. Omega then started doing it with their Constellations. Patek didn’t really do it for wristwatches as far as I know. What Patek does is stamp their movements with a Geneva seal of quality. Some of them have one stamp, and some of them have two. But nobody has ever been able to explain to me the difference. It’s the same stamp. One would be like on a bridge, and one would be on the lower plate. And that just means that it met certain standards of quality production.

Louis Cartier initiated a creative approach to timepieces. In 1904, pocket watches were the norm. One time, an aviator complained to Cartier that it was awkward to try to pull out a pocket watch to check the time while flying. Cartier designed a small, flat timepiece that could be strapped to the wrist. Thus the Santos wristwatch was born and quickly became a hit with Cartier’s many customers. Collecting watches doesn’t start suddenly, like collecting stamps or coins. Most people think about collecting after meeting others with the same interest, as for instance seeing people at watch auctions or talking to collectors at ‘Get togethers’ organized by watch enthusiasts.

Ask any serious watch collector and they will generally include the Speedmaster on their list of all-time favorite watches for a number of reasons. For the truly obsessed, the Speedmaster Professional model to collect is the calibre321 from 1967 –the exact model worn during the Apollo 11 mission. However, the immediate successor to this model is what we’re talking about here, and they began production in 1968. Visually, the321 and861 calibres are nearly identical, so unless you get obsessive you’d be hard pressed to tell them apart. The Calibre is deceptively large. Seeing it in a store window I would bet money it was larger than its 42mm wide size might suggest. Thanks to a hefty crown guard and large, widely spaced lugs this watch is one of the best optical illusions around. Thanks to the lugs allowing the bottom to wrap around your wrist, this watch is quite comfortable to wear and in addition to that, the piece does not have a tall profile. B. Like the sales people at Cartier and Tiffany, I highly doubt your jeweler can tell the difference between a real 70’s Cartier movement that would have been used in your watch and a fake.
